Japan is bike-friendly enabling to ride far outside highways. The best biking destinations are the Japanese Alps on Honshu, Kushu and Sikoku islands, and Hokkaido's national parks. Bikes can be rented throughout especially near stations and tourist centers.

Always block your bike outdoors with a special lock - bike hijacking is the commonest crime in safe Japan. To take a bike on a train (for a ticket surcharge), you need a cycle case (rinkou bukuro) sold at any bike store.
