Japan Rail Student Discount
Anyone can use a 5-day youth ticket JR Seishun 18 (Juhachi) Kippu Ticket (JR seasonal discount ticket for local and rapid trains) during student vacation for about $120 (11,500 yens). It can be returned only prior to use and with a $2 (210 yens) deduction.

It's valid all over Japan - for JR local trains, JR rapid trains, a JR ferryboat between Miyajimaguchi and the Miyajima island, and JR limited express trains (non-reserved seats) between Kanita and Kikonai, Shin-Yubari and Shintoku within Hokkaido.
You can buy the ticket at major JR stations in Japan or foreign representatives. It's rewarding when riding for over 140km a day (e.g. from Tokyo Sta. to Fuji Sta.). Besides, it entitles to a discount at JR Hotel Group hotels.

Usage Notes
- This ticket serves for 5 days within the designated period or is sharable among up to 4 other people on the same route. It's valid for any calendar day in a period.
- The marked usage day allows for unlimited boarding and exiting at any JR station and the JR ferry terminal. After your entering the ticket gate of any JR station, JR staff must mark the ticket with the dates of use.
- Some local/rapid trains require a seat reservation or other surcharges (e. g. the Green Car, priority seats).
- Express trains, limited expresses, sleeping coaches, the Green Car except local trains and JR buses are not covered.
- 1 use of the ticket allows riding the trains for 1 day. You can travel overnight only up to the 1st stop on the line after 12pm this way. Only in Tokyo and Osaka a single ticket also serves the last day trains after midnight.
