Suica Card

The Super Urban Intelligent Card is a rechargeable smart card for most JR lines and all subways and buses in Greater Tokyo. Issued in East Japan (the Kanto region), it's interoperable with the Icoca card in West Japan (the Kansai region) and has 3 types:

• Basic for multiple users
• Registered for only its holder also refunding the balance if lost.
• Commuter Pass for cheaper regular discounted monthly fares and free travel.

Suica is also an e-money card to pay for goods in a growing number of stores.

Pasmo Card

A rechargeable smart card for trains and buses in Greater Tokyo. Classified almost as Suica, Pasmo also offers an automatic top-up service to top the card up by 3,000 yen from the user's credit card whenever the charge remaining is under 2,000 yen.

Suica is better for nationwide travel. Bought at Narita Airport, it gets you a cheaper ride on the Narita Express. Pasmo is also acceptable as e-money in Suica stores.
